This weekend, communities across the country are asked to observe National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. Starting today, residents can pay their respects to the men and women who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty by flying the American flag at half staff in accordance with federal law.
Last year, 118 firefighters lost their lives protecting others, including two from Indiana. Those Hoosiers are:
Capt. David Sherfick, Brown Township Fire and Rescue, Last call - 2/4/08
Firefighter Jay Maddy, Eaton Volunteer Fire Department, Last call - 5/24/08
Hundreds of family members of fallen firefighters are travelling to Emmitsburg, Md., to participate in the national memorial ceremony on the grounds of the National fire Academy. There will be a candlelight service on Saturday evening, beginning at 6:30 p.m., and a Sunday morning memorial service at 9:30 a.m.
Both services can be viewed live online at FireHero.org, STATler911.com, FireEngineering.com, and FireHouse.com.
