Howard County Sheriff Deputies, Greentown Police, and Indiana State Police are investigating the brutal beating of a young woman.
Jamie D. Harney, 26, of 603 E. Walnut, was found unconscious and bleeding inside her home by Greentown Police and Howard County Sheriff Deputies shortly after 7:00 a.m. Friday morning. Harney's children had gone to the home of a neighbor for help after discovering their critically injured mother. The neighbor dialed 911.
"We had a Deputy within a couple blocks of that address when the emergency call went out," said Sheriff Marty Talbert. Greentown Marshal Jeff Bennett was also on duty, and both officers were on the scene within four minutes.
The Greentown Volunteer Fire Department ambulance and paramedics from Howard RegionalHospital responded to the scene. Harney was transported by ambulance to HowardRegionalHospital, and later transferred by Life Line Helicopter to MethodistHospital in Indianapolis.
Indiana State Police Crime Scene Technicians are assisting with the investigation.
"I can tell you we do not have a call history at this address," said Talbert.
Investigators believe the victim was home alone with her three children when the attack occurred. The children were not harmed. Harney's husband was away on business.
"This investigation is still in the very early stages. We believe this happened sometime overnight. We are still processing the crime scene," said Major Steve Rogers.
Greentown is a small community of 2,500 people located on U.S. 35 between Kokomo and Marion. "This is the type of community where violent crime is a rare occurrence," the Sheriff added. "It's the kind of place where folks might not lock their doors, but one thing's for certain, they will tonight."
Authorities are asking anyone with information that might assist investigators to contact the Sheriff Department's Criminal Investigation Division.
"We would like to hear from anyone who may have had any contact with Jamie Harney on Thursday afternoon or evening to contact us," said Sheriff's Lt. Greg Hargrove.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Howard County Sheriff Department Criminal Investigation Division at (765) 456-2031, or the Central Indiana Crimestoppers at (800) 922-5378.
